What is Aphasia?

Aphasia, which occurs as a result of damage to certain regions of the brain; It is an acquired language disorder that negatively affects comprehension, speech production, repetition, naming, reading and writing processes. Deteriorations can be seen in any or all of these areas.

Different components of language can be negatively affected in aphasia;

  • semantics (semantic),

  • phonetics (phonology),

  • Morphology (morphology),

  • Syntax(syntax),

  • Corruption may occur in one or all of the components such as usage information (act-syntax) .

Although the most common cause is stroke, impact or accidental brain injuries have similar effects that can reduce language use skills from mild to severe. Aphasia affects language inputs as well as language outputs; A person with aphasia has a reduced ability to understand and produce both written and spoken language.

Considering the problems experienced by individuals with aphasia,

  • Physical/medical problems (paralysis, vision problems, swallowing and epilepsy etc.)

  • Language-related problems (problems in expressing the person, loss of speech, severe impairment in reading and writing, apraxia and dysarthria, etc.)

  • Psychological problems (depression, anxiety stress, loss of anger control, feeling helpless and inadequate, etc.)

  • Social problems (isolation, decrease in friends and social circle, feeling of loneliness etc.) stand out.
